Dallas was born in Nampa, Idaho to Doyle and Vennette (Churchill) Ward. When Dallas was a young child, his mother remarried and his name was changed to McCain. Dallas grew up attending country schools in and around Funk and Holdrege, Nebraska, graduating from Holdrege High School in 1965.
Dallas married Jane Horton January 1967 and they had one son Chad McCain while stationed in Great Falls, Montana. In 1998, Dallas married Jane (Smit) Heim. Dallas loved spending time with his family. He was often found supporting kids in sports and performing arts, helping them establish their homes, and bursting with pride as they grew into individuals with passion and purpose. He was especially proud when Chad followed his father and grandfather into military service by joining the Navy and serving as a navigator of A6 Intruders. As grandchildren arrived, Dallas especially liked the boys' soccer games, even though he was occasionally chilly, sweaty or soaked! The granddaughters loved his teasing and playfulness.
Dallas joined the Air Force in 1967 serving as a medic. After serving in the military Dallas began working in eye care, later becoming a medical assistant with Nebraska Medicine. A few years after retiring in January 2013, Dallas enjoyed the comradery of driving vehicles from auctions to lots.
Dallas enjoyed nature and foliage. He fished, hunted and was always the first to spot a red-tailed hawk. Trips with family and friends were enjoyed and embellished in stories that were told for years. His dad jokes were notorious, and they were delivered with an impish grin and a twinkle in his eye. Dallas collected and repaired mechanical mantle clocks, and he designed and created unique personal clocks. He enjoyed designing and tooling leather. Dallas was creative and liked detail work. Dallas liked to go for drives. He was known for sssllllooooowwwwly driving about town but putting the pedal to the metal on the open highway. Dallas did not care for the winter weather in Nebraska, and he started dreading it in October. He preferred the salty warmth of an ocean from which he caught many fish. Dallas was quick to offer a hand to everyone in need. He was a true and loyal friend.
