Doug was born on August 17, 1957, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Charles and Ruby Kuncl. He was raised in South Omaha and attended Paul VI High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Doug was very smart and dedicated to his education. As much as he was intelligent, he was all the more kind at heart. In true Doug fashion, he maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average every year through high school and college. During high school, he was four-year class president; graduated as the class Valedictorian and graduated Summa Cum Laude from UNO. He was an avid weight lifter and loved motorcycles, muscle cars, and his bulldog Barney who has lived on in many stories recounted about those early years. Later came bulldog Prada, who kept Doug active on long walks around Standing Bear Lake, ending typically at Burger King where she was treated to a 10-piece chicken nugget meal.
He had a favorite ’69 Red Charger that he bought with his own money; he was very proud of it, washing and waxing it often. Doug also spent much of his time volunteering and ushering at Saint Mary Magdalene Church, spending some summers climbing high scaffolding to paint chapel ceilings and walls, allowing time for personal quiet time and prayer. God was always a priority in Doug's life and remained so until the end. He loved the outdoors and often joked that he missed his calling as a Forester.
While in college he dated and later married Lisa Gonzalez in 1984. He would often wrangle up his three girls on a Saturday morning and set off on an 11-plus mile run, the three girls on bike in tow. Doug was very devoted to his three beautiful girls whom he thought the world of and was immensely proud. All three were admittedly, “Daddy’s girls,” and enjoyed their quality time which often included trips to Pipal Park, QT snack runs, and taking turns doing their Dad’s makeup.
Doug worked at Catholic Charities as the Finance Director for over 30 years. During this time Doug served on several boards and was involved in fundraisers with United Way. Doug felt personal satisfaction from working at a nonprofit that helped those in need. Doug was instrumental in the leadership team at Catholic Charities as they opened several new programs in and around the Omaha area. After his time at Catholic Charities he worked on several boards and did bookkeeping for other nonprofit organizations.
Doug often accompanied his daughters to church and was an active participant in Fresh Start ministry for a couple of years alongside good friend and mentor Dave Songster. In his last years, Doug enjoyed seeing his three daughters, friends, and taking long rides in his baby blue Jaguar.
In the decades that Doug was married to Lisa, he gained an entire other family in the Gonzalezes. Many cousins and friends from multiple states have reached out with fond memories about times spent on the beaches of Okoboji to the shores of Corpus Christi.
Doug was welcomed to Heaven by his mother and father, his brother Nick. He is survived by his children: Jerica (Mike O’Connell) and grandchildren Judah, Journey, Royce; Annie (Sam Frei) and granddaughter Lenny; Alyssa (Frankie Kellerman) and granddaughter Anya. Other survivors include: sister-in-law Janice (Rech) Kuncl; sisters Debra (Bill Lang) and Sandra (Bret Geist); the Gonzalez family; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends on both sides of the families who loved him dearly and will miss him.
The family is kindly asking you to send any memories or stories to AnnieKuncl@gmail.com
In lieu of flowers, the family will direct memorials to Doug’s favorite causes.
If you attend the service please dress casually as that is how Doug was most comfortable.
The Kuncl and Gonzalez family extend their most sincere thank you for your love, thoughts and prayers.
