Elmer B. Reeves Jr., 75, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. 

Born on April 18, 1949, in Omaha, Elmer was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, neighbor, and coach. His passion for track and field shaped his life, both as an athlete and a legendary coach, earning him a respected place in the sports community. As he should be, for he was the fastest runner in 1967, running in the 100 and 220-yard dash. A king's crown is earned through respect, not fear, and Elmer not only gave the utmost respect to anyone he met, but he was also well respected everywhere he went. Known for his giving spirit and unwavering dedication to his athletes, Coach Budgie touched countless lives. 

He took pride in being a good neighbor and always found joy in giving to those in need. His kindness, mentorship, and love for competition will be deeply missed but never forgotten. 

Elmer was proceeded in death by his beloved mother and father, Elmer Reeves Sr and Earnie Mae Reeves; his sisters Caroline "Cat" Reeves andNealia Reeves; and his son Darin Sherrod Sr. 

Elmer is survived by his loving wife, Lucye M. Reeves; his children, Darin Sherrod Jr., Elmer Rainey, Tamara Reeves-Grigsby, Tamika Reeves-Thomas, and Joyelle Blessing; and his cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Sheila Golonka, along with a host of extended family, friends, and former athletes who were inspired by his guidance and passion. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Assembly of the Saints, 4224 North 24th Street, Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday, February 22 at 10 AM. The Repass is at the APEX Family Care, 4805 N 72nd St, Omaha, NE 68134 from 3:00 - 6:00 PM

Elmer "Coach Budgie" Reeves Jr. ran his race with determination, heart, and purpose—his impact will live on for generations to come.
