It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Edwin Blann, who left us on January 31, 2025, at the age of 60. James was preceded in death by his grandparents and his beloved mother, Carolynne. He is survived by his cherished son, Colin; stepdaughter Jennifer(Tom); grandchildren Justice, Henry, Charlotte and Lucy; his father, Jim Sr.; his brother, Doug (Michelle); his sister, Brenda; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, and cousins.
James grew up in La Vista, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school in 1982. He later attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he began his lifelong career in construction. James spent much of his adult life in the family business, helping to build many luxury homes in the Omaha area alongside his father, uncle, and brother. Throughout his career, he continued to work on countless building and remodeling projects.
James was not only a dedicated worker, but he was also an avid sports enthusiast. His love for bowling was a family tradition, as he bowled in league play throughout his youth and adult years alongside his father, brother, and sister. He passed this passion on to his son, Colin, and stepdaughter, Jennifer, teaching them both the joy of the game.
In addition to bowling, James was an accomplished athlete with a love for basketball and baseball. His talent and determination led him to play baseball on a farm team, just one step down from professional baseball, a testament to his athleticism and dedication. His love for sports was a defining part of who he was, and it shaped many fond memories with family and friends.
Beyond his work and sports, James had a passion for grilling and smoking meats, specializing in ribs and pork butts—dishes so expertly crafted that he could have easily made a career out of it. He even competed in BBQ competitions, showcasing his natural talent and love for the craft. James also found peace and joy in the great outdoors, especially when camping and fishing. On many days, you could find him with a fishing pole in hand, enjoying the serenity of local fishing holes or proudly catching record-setting catfish from the Missouri River.
Despite the challenges he faced, James’s humor and warmth never wavered. He struggled with mental health issues and addiction throughout his life, but those who knew him best remember him for his bright spirit, laughter, and generosity. James’s caring nature and his ability to bring joy to others were undeniable, even during the toughest of times. He may have felt lonely in his final years, but the love he had for his son, Colin, remained unwavering and was the light of his life. James’s bond with Colin was one of deep love and devotion, and that connection stood as a testament to the strength of their relationship.
Though James’s journey was marked by both joy and struggle, his legacy is one of love, resilience, and the lasting impact he had on those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his kind heart.
