With deep sadness we share the passing of James “Jim” Richard Gehrken, age 74. Born on November 21, 1949, he was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed us too soon on October 11, 2024.
Born and raised in Gretna, Nebraska, Jim graduated in 1967 from Gretna High School and went on to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he was active in many campus groups. He married his former spouse, Rosalind (Houser) Gehrken, at Grenta’s St. Patrick's Church on June 9, 1973. In 1982, Jim and Roz welcomed their first child, Jason, into the world. Followed by their daughter, Briana, in 1985.
From 1976 until 1989, Jim owned and operated The Short Stop, a thriving part of the Gretna community. He later went on to open Silk Plants in both Gretna and Omaha. In constant pursuit of what he wanted to be when he grew up, in 1999 Jim received an Associate Degree in Networking Technology from Metro Community College, landing him a Network Administrator role with Oakview Construction. Throughout his many different vocations, perhaps one of Jim’s most cherished experiences was working as a manager of a local Mexican restaurant alongside his son and daughter.
Outside of work, Jim loved spending time with his family and friends – he was always the life of the party. He was a proud father to his daughter, Briana (Gehrken) Phelan, and his son, Jason Gehrken. He was a loving papa to his three grandchildren, Adelaide, Liam, and Eleanor. Jim spent his last years in retirement, living life to the fullest, surrounded by his many loving friends at Avidor Omaha.
Jim is preceded in death by his mother, Adelaide (Gnaster) Gehrken; father, Herman Gehrken; and former spouse, Rosalind (Houser) Gehrken. He is survived by his sister, JoAnn (Gehrken) Drueke; daughter Briana; son Jason; and his three cherished grandchildren.
James was known for his kindness, wisdom, and the love he shared with those around him. He touched so many lives with his humor and friendship. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In true Jim fashion, a Celebration of Life will be hosted at Barroco Wine Bar (2935 S 108th St, Omaha, NE) on Wednesday, October 23rd from 5:30-7:30PM with a private interment service to follow at a later date. Jim will be laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Gretna, Nebraska alongside his beloved father and mother.
In lieu of flowers, Jim has requested donations be made in his name to his daughter’s nonprofit, Felius Cat Cafe and Rescue.
