John Gregory Smith, born on January 13, 1955, in Platte City, Missouri, passed away on May 19, 2024, at his home in Bellevue, Nebraska. Raised in Shenandoah, Iowa, he graduated from Shenandoah Public Schools in 1972. John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era, earning an honorable discharge and recognition as a disabled veteran.
On December 21, 1979, John married Rose Phyllis Calabro in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Together, they raised two sons, Johnny and Tony. John was a devoted family man, known for his humor, kindness, and dedication to his grandchildren, Anthony, Angelo, Jerek, and Rivers. He loved spoiling his grandsons with treats and toys and was always ready with a joke or a piece of trivia.
John had a passion for writing, with his poetry published in "The Luminescent Night." He was also an avid NASCAR fan, particularly of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; sons Johnny Smith and Anthony (Tony) Calabro; daughter-in-law, Heather Calabro; grandsons Jerek Smith, Rivers Smith, Anthony Calabro Jr., and Angelo Calabro; and his beloved dog, Princess.
Private services will be held at the Military Veterans Services Center on Bellevue University Campus, with interment at Omaha National Cemetery. The Millard VFW will conduct a rifle volley and play Taps, and the Marines will honor John with the American flag fold and presentation.
