Marie Chaney

September 17, 1926 — January 8, 2025

Omaha, Nebraska - Marie Ella Chaney, 98, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, and The Villages, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska, where she had lived near, or with, her daughter Marilyn for the past eight years.

Marie was born on September 17, 1926, the daughter of Bertha Marie (Heidemann) and Charles Frederick Bartling of Denver, Iowa. Marie was raised on a farm and later at a country house with cottages and a filling station, both just south of Denver, Iowa. She loved riding horses with her friends, singing and yodeling, and going to dances in Denver. After World War II, she met her future husband-to-be, U.S. Army-veteran Harold William Chaney, and they frequently attended dances in Denver. They were married in 1946. After a short stint living in Elora, Iowa, they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where in circa 1950 they opened the Chaney Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning business. Marie was the business bookkeeper and homemaker, great cook/baker, and loving mother for their four children. They operated the plumbing business until the late-1970s, at which point their oldest son, David, took over the business, and they began wintering in Florida and summering in Colorado. They became permanent Florida residents in the early 1980s, first in Lehigh Acres and later in The Villages. Marie and Harold were avid golfers; Marie won several local club championships and had nearly10 holes-in-one.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her sister, Mildred Bartling Cook, her brothers, Harold Bartling and Elmer Bartling, and her great granddaughter, Eve Marie Chaney. Marie is survived by her children, David (Susan) Chaney of The Villages, Florida, Marilyn Chaney of Omaha, Nebraska, Mike (Nancy) Chaney of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Gary (Carolyn) Chaney of Ft. Collins, Colorado, her four grandchildren, Jennifer Chaney Weaver, Karen Chaney Hafermann, Larissa Chaney (John) Santana, Mark Chaney, her five great grandchildren, Kasey Sue Weaver, Jessie Weaver, Eva Susan Hafermann, Cecilia Hafermann, and Annaliese Santana, and her beloved nieces and nephews.
