THE GREEN OF SNOW
Nadine Long
A sprig of evergreen on the ground
I look about, no tree around
It merges with my memories
Of Christmas trees and frivolities
It melts my heart to see it so
Not branched nor covered in crunchy snow.
I pick it up and smell its scent
It greened the Earth where'er it went
I twirl it gently in my hand
Another might toss it in a garbage can
I lay it down on concrete walk
Atop a layer of children's chalk
Amazed at how some evergreen
Could add so much to a whitish scene
