Roy Lee Childs was born March 3, 1955, to Roy Edward and Goldie Grace Childs of rural Kansas.
He joined siblings Everett, Art, and Virginia, and would soon be followed by two more brothers, Dean and Glen, bringing the Childs brood to six. While his parents were busy eking out a living to feed and clothe their six kids, Roy was busy developing skills that would shape his own world and future.
Roy loved to talk about growing up poor and nearly always made it sound like fun. School and 4-H club added structure to Roy's life. He signed up for 4-H projects like gardening, wood working, electricity, forestry, and entomology. Roy was a good student and tried out for any musical opportunity the school had to offer. Music gave him the chance to travel outside of Plevna. He picked up the traveling bug early in his life and never lost it. It was his 11th grade year when he caught the eye of a cute little red-headed girl and asked her for a date.
Along with his high school sweetheart, Kara, Roy graduated from Fairfield High School in 1973 and went on to attend Hutchinson Community Junior College. Roy studied Radio Broadcasting and landed a DJ position with KWHK radio in Hutchinson, KS. There he was dubbed "Radio Roy".
For over 48 years, Roy and Kara enjoyed a life of love and family. They had four children and thirteen grandchildren who kept their lives full. His sense of humor, zest for life, and strong faith will leave a legacy.
Roy L. Childs passed away January 29, 2023 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 67 years.
