Walter E. Peffer, Jr.

October 21, 1946 — January 20, 2025

Walter Edward Peffer Jr., a devoted family man, accomplished professional, and proud United States Army veteran, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Walt was born on October 21, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter Edward Peffer and Leona Mae Peffer, both of whom preceded him in death.

At the time of his passing, Walt was lovingly married to Susan, the love of his life, with whom he shared a devoted and joyful union since their wedding on July 31, 1992. Together, they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family, serving as an inspiration to all who knew them.

Walt was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael and William (Betty) Peffer, and his sister, Diana Peffer. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving family: his wife, Susan Peffer,  his son, Jeff Peffer (Stacy); his daughters, Angie Connell (Matt) and Dannielle Laramee (David); his many treasured grandchildren Jacob, Julian, Brooke, Lauryn, Chloe, Grace, Henry, Hailey, and Lauren; and great-grandchildren Kensley, Avery, and Brooks; and his brother, Tim Peffer (Deb); many other family members and friends who are family.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Walt's career spanned over 30 years of impactful work in business and government. He served as Douglas County Assessor/Register of Deeds and held the role of Chief of Staff for four Omaha Mayors: Eugene Leahy, Edward Zorinsky, Walt Calinger, and P.J. Morgan. Walt was instrumental in municipal budget development, legislative advocacy, and navigating complex real estate transactions during his tenure with P.J. Morgan Real Estate.

In 1980, Walt, alongside his brother Tim and other family, founded Pefferoni's, a beloved pizza restaurant that began as a single location in Florence, Nebraska. Their dedication to quality food and creative dining experiences led to the rapid expansion of the business. By 1981, a second location opened, and eventually, the chain grew to include 18 restaurants in Omaha, Lincoln, Denver, and Austin. As a side note - Police and clergy ate for free.

Walt's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his community extended far beyond the restaurant industry.

In addition to his professional achievements, Walt actively contributed to the community through his involvement with the United Way, the Omaha Area Board of Realtors Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Nebraska and National League of Cities. He was honored with several accolades, including the United Way of the Midlands Government Division Chairman of the Year and Ralston Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in 2012.

Throughout his professional career, Walt has demonstrated a remarkable ability to balance his business endeavors with his deep commitment to his family and community. Known affectionately as "Coach Peffer," he dedicated countless hours to inspiring and mentoring young athletes across various sports and levels. Over the years, he coached hundreds of children, leaving an enduring legacy of leadership, encouragement, and personal growth. His genuine passion for coaching and unwavering dedication to his players earned him the admiration and respect of the community. To this day, many adults who benefited from his guidance continue to greet him as "Coach Peffer," a testament to the profound and lasting impact he made on their lives, both on and off the field.

A Life Well Lived

Walt's dedication extended beyond his professional life. He was deeply engaged in his church, civic organizations, and causes that strengthened the Omaha community. He also served as a member of the College World Series Executive Board, the City of Omaha Charter Review Commission, and the Omaha Efficiency Commission.

A proud Vietnam veteran, Walt served his country with honor as a member of the United States Army. His unwavering commitment to service, both military and civilian, leaves an enduring legacy that will not be forgotten.
